WH Reporters Stand For Obama, But Not For Bush?

(Follow me on Twitter)

Consider these two different reactions from the White House press corps during presidential drop-ins at the White House’s James S. Brady Briefing Room:

UPDATE: A commenter points out that, on occasion, White House reporters did stand for Bush (example here), raising an interesting question: Why the inconsistency in protocol?

Pres. Bush would have scoffed at “Brown Nosers”…BHO,exspects them…

#2 sf on 05.03.09 at 5:57 am

Great work, Patrick. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it. I would have thought this story so outrageous that it had to have been invented by conservatives trying to prove the MSM is biased.

But it’s hard to deny it when you see the tapes.

Wonder how long it’ll be before You-Tube hard-leftist censors remove your clip?

#3 James on 05.03.09 at 12:37 pm

Typical. Shows what we already knew. The press is hollywood-centric and liberal to the core. Even in light of the first bimbo wearing $500 tennis shoes to hand food out to “the hungry”, they just give them a pass and lap it up like the dogs they are. Nothing but a bunch of ingrates.

#4 Vink on 05.03.09 at 12:44 pm

The cult of personality created around Obama by the so-called Free Press is frightening.

Perhaps Bush Jr. was not as insecure as BHO? Bush didn’t need to lord over children, making children stand in his presence?

#12 Dr. Keith Gebhart on 05.03.09 at 12:48 pm

Media standing up for respect to the candidate they endorsed as their liberal choice over the conservative Bush is no surprise. The sad story is that the media spins/spun Obama/Bush to their advantage daily in their rag sheets and news networks. And most individuals in America buy into it hook, line and sinker. Pravda never did it as well!

#13 GoldfngrNC on 05.03.09 at 12:50 pm

Yeah, very telling about those reporters. They are so in love and “enchanted” with him it is sickening!

The press has been have whorgasims since the second Tuesday in November. They seem incapable of ingratiating themselves to the Maximum Leader quickly enough.

#18 Fred on 05.03.09 at 12:55 pm

#20 Carl Roessler on 05.03.09 at 12:58 pm

#21 Jolat on 05.03.09 at 12:58 pm

I’m not surprised one bit. I haven’t heard any of the mainstream media do one single objective story about Pres. O. He can do no wrong, and Pres. B. could do no right. I’m afraid the worst is yet to come.
God help us all.

#23 Colonel Attilla on 05.03.09 at 12:59 pm

The WHPC is made up of anti-American liberals who are biased against/hate conservatives. They are not “journalists” by any stretch of the imagination, just cheerleaders for our new socialist/communist leader who is trying to nationalize everything. Obama is like an evil doctor standing over a patient eagerly awaiting the opportunity to pull the plug. Unless someone stops this moron, capitalism will be dead at the hands of the dimwits now in power!

#24 Paul Richardson on 05.03.09 at 1:00 pm

Is it any wonder why? Bush lost the trust and respect of the American people with his war of choice, his arrogance, and his undermining of our constitution and individual liberties.

#30 Tom on 05.03.09 at 1:22 pm

And this means what ? Not sure of your angle here, but all that tells me is they stand for Obama. That isn’t a surprise seeing how most mainstream media outlets were in the tank for Obama from the get go. Bush on the other hand never had a “honeymoon” and was swimming upstream throughout his Administration. His first 100 days were riddled with questions, complaints, and claims he was “selected” and not “elected”. Many, throughout his terms in office never even viewed him as the President. If you’re trying to add even more evidence to point out the lack of objectivity in our media and the press corps, great, you’re correct. They’re idealogically subjective sycophants pro one and anti the other. Fox isn’t the only partisan news outlet. They’re simply the only partisan news outlet with a conservative perspective. All others are partisan as well.

#31 Eli on 05.03.09 at 1:22 pm

Very interesting. Video could not be played. Message - ‘Embedding disabled by request’…hummm
wonder who was the “requester” ?
Such a transparent presidency we are getting with this One. No matter - it has been obvious for 7.99 years that the media was blatantly biased against Bush. He didn’t stand a snowball’s chance of fair treatment. Obama, on the other hand, will always be The 2nd Greatest: a tad below Muhammed Ali, and will be given endless standing ovations by the toadying press.
Kruschev was right.

#32 John M. Regan on 05.03.09 at 1:34 pm

I blame BUSH for not demanding the respect the office of President of the U.S. requires. He(BUSH) should have dismissed those reporters who refused to stand when he came into the room. It has nothing to do with Bush as a person. It has everything to do with the office of the President. The press disliked Bush because he waged the Iraq war which they did not support. So what! His was the office and his was the dignity that that office has merited. The press is not worthy of the access it has since they have no concept of its history. The vetting process for these reporters should be intensified and those antagonistic to the U.S. should be excluded.

#33 Keith on 05.03.09 at 1:37 pm

Not only do they stand for Obama, they practically want to get teabagged by him.

#45 NoReal Freepress on 05.03.09 at 1:58 pm

Most thinking people realize the major media is anti U.S. & any regime that runs on the major media’s platform is uplifted. In turn anything that makes the U.S. a threat to world communism is trashed & left disrespected in their treatment. Ask yourself if you wanted to destroy the U.S. from within wouldn’t you a.) bankrupt it’s reserves b.) get rid of anything having to do with faith in God & moral uplifting of spirit c.) make class warfare against by punish the working class & reward the undereducated nonworking class telling them it is not their fault they are poor d.) take away real judicial punishment for violent crime such as the death penalty e.) take away the right to defend yourselves from the chaos that will follow as a consequence.

#46 Paul Tripp on 05.03.09 at 1:58 pm

Bernard Goldberg said in his book, “Bias” 99 percent of reporters are Democrats so this doesn’t surprise me. Secondly, the media is in a sad state these days. The bias is obvious and laughable. I don’t think it will change. We each choose the media that favors our worldview. Intellectual neutrality is a myth and impossible.

#47 Jim on 05.03.09 at 2:02 pm

If you click on the diabled embed, it will take you to U-Tube and you can see for yourself: Not only does the press NOT stand for President Bush, they keep jabbering away as though some other reporter — instead of the Chief of State of the United States of America — enters the room.

With Obama, the Transcriber Corps (they’re not reporters, just note takers) stood in deference to their Master.

Dude, where’s my country?

Is this a surprise? This country will learn how biased our media is against Republicans. Meanwhile AP main story is the Obama’s take a walk. There is a huge double standard in this country. Can you imagine if it were Bush’s wife buying $450.00 shoes during a financial crisis instead of the Queen Mechelle? The outrage would be deafning. Also a side note, why is it we heard how Bush was a liar every day, yet, Obama runs his campaign on the idea that he will bring the troops home asap…now we hear not until 2011 or 2012…yet he is not considered a liar….he changed his mind right?

This is not surprising as the press has always been in bed with Obama and his campaign so why not continue the sycophantic behavior? They don’t really ask him pertinent questions otherwise and as they wish to continue their love affair, this and similar behaviors will likely continue.

#54 Dan Gallo on 05.03.09 at 2:21 pm

Gee, should anyone be surprised? The media has morphed into the “Obama Propaganda Ministry”. Also, should anyone be surprised that YouTube pulled the video from your blog? Answer this for me: Why does the Media persist in its left-wing slant when it’s that very posture that’s responsible for the Media losing money? Advertisers are pulling their business because they don’t want to be linked with that political agenda.

I’m not an Obama fan and I have great admiration for president Bush. But, I did see a video where the press corps stood for president Bush. The most recent example was his last press conference. They weren’t nearly as enthusiastic, mind you. But, they seemed to show respect.

Maybe a better example would be to show multiple occasions where this has happened between the two presidencies. Clearly, there is a media bias. I’d just love ot see it more clearly displayed. :)

#58 Cope on 05.03.09 at 2:25 pm

Could this be because it was at the end of Bush’s term and since he was a bit more casual than others that he had already told the press NOT to stand for him? Could it be because Obamas team has instructed press to stand? Could it be a million different things? I don’t think two short video clips make any kind of official statement about respect, qualifications or anything else. I think to infer any such thing is short minded and rediculous.

Bush was President for eight years. Trying to make a comparison between the two when Obama is at 100 days is less than honest.

Consistency should be examined at the end of Obama’s term.

Until then this argument is dishonest.

#78 AuKestrel on 05.05.09 at 10:14 am

http://www.slate.com/id/2217664/

This may seem silly, but it’s symbolic: The discrepancy in treatment is all the proof a Republican needs to show that the press shows special deference to the new Democratic president. It’s a distorted picture, though. We stood all the time for President Bush. Reporters customarily do so to show respect for the office of the presidency. In the East Room of the White House, we stood not only when the president came in but to ask questions. Some reporters said thank you to the president even before asking their questions. This practice continues under President Obama.

There are different rules for the briefing room, though, which is the place both events on the video took place. It’s more informal. (CBS’s Mark Knoller talked to Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer, who confirmed that no offense was taken when the press didn’t stand in the briefing room.) It’s not that there is a no-standing policy, exactly, but more that the question is unresolved. The press didn’t stand for Bush in February but did when the president visited the briefing room for the last time. When he held press conferences in the Eisenhower Old Executive Office Building, the press did stand. Same with the Rose Garden. (On foreign trips, it was confusing. We stood when the host country’s press corps often didn’t, but once in Tanzania the roles were reversed for some reason, and the U.S. press had to stand quickly to catch up with the local Tanzanians.)

One reason reporters stay in their seats in the briefing room is that the space there is very tight. The cameramen and still photographers are in the back of the room and can’t get a clean shot of his few brief steps if the press is standing. (Listen to the cameras click wildly when Bush walks in.) The president is powerful and all, but it’s never wise to thwart the cameramen and still photographers. (This also goes for selecting movies on Air Force One, where during my years of traveling with Clinton and Bush they exercised total control over the viewing in the press cabin. Zoolander and Barbershop were particular favorites.)

Why, then, didn’t the members of the press stay in their seats when Obama walked in last Friday? Unlike the Bush planned press conference in February, Obama’s visit was a complete surprise (you hear fewer clicks because not every photographer is there), which meant the natural instinct to stand when a president enters the room may have kicked in as it did with Bush’s last visit. As you can see from the video, they also ruined the shot, which means standing not only invited grief from conservatives but from their colleagues, too.

#79 MC78 on 05.05.09 at 10:14 am

Give me a president that is not all show (obama)
the press is in love with him what they see I have no idea !!!!!!!!!!!!!

#80 jjorg on 05.05.09 at 10:18 am

So this article only addresses the actions of the press regarding their superficial behaviors that have nothing to do with their actual ability to function and dig for facts and the real stories–sorry this statement seems to include this article.

So if we really need to go here, what does the press conference footage on the same date in 2001, and just after 9-11-2001 demonstrate? After 9-11, later, during the buildup to the Iraq invasion are you claiming the press was also both disrespectful to Bush and also really digging for the truth-I doubt it?

Also, whether or not the press is being granted full access or threatened with being denied access might affect the majority of their reactions. Along this line, are you suggesting that absolutely no conservative leaning reporters or pundits would have attended Bush’s press conference to have been willing to stand for the commander and chief?

#81 Kevin on 05.05.09 at 10:18 am

The press is the press. They are seeking news worthy material to report. I think the issue is the amount of respect each of the Presidents commanded. President Obama commands a greater deal of respect than former President G. W. Bush. It is hard not to respect someone who has shown respect and presents himself in such an intellectural way. It is in response to how each President had and has presented himself.

#82 Jilli on 05.05.09 at 11:57 am

Hmmm…could it be that they respect Pres. Obama and didn’t respect Bush? I personally wouldn’t spit on GW Albatross if his face was on fire. I understand their reaction.
